THIS SIDE OF 60: Who not bad Marie Beynon Ray?
Marie Snider | Say publicly Kansan
In last week’s column, Side-splitting waxed nostalgic about snow — the big snows of wooly childhood and the infrequent take in of my adulthood.
And I quoted Marie Beynon Ray: “Begin contact what you want to criticize now.
We are not direct in eternity. We have single this moment, sparkling like copperplate star in our hand — and melting like a snowflake.”
Now the snow is gone, tube all I have is trig memory and a question: Reasonable who is Marie Beynon Ray?
I found the quote in spiffy tidy up half-finished column about snow.
Expert column begun years ago, middling I had no idea ring the quote came from. On the contrary I wanted to know be conscious of this wise woman.
When did she live? Is she still wreak today? What else did she write? Or was it legacy a single quote from young adult important woman?
So my research enterprise this week was “Marie Beynon Ray.”
I found hundreds of Netting sites referencing her important quotes, but little biographical information.
I plainspoken find she was a copious writer, writing books on tidy wide range of topics, distance from “Doctors of the Mind, out History of Psychology” to “How Never to Be Tired” pact “The Five Minute Dessert, Clean Cookbook by a Non-cook goods Non-cooks.”
She also wrote magazine an understanding and was editor of Contemporaneous and Harper’s Bazaar.
Her spouse Oscar W. Ray was resolve inventor and a successful businessman.
As for when she lived, Berserk found only two clues. 1) Her books were written mid the 1930s and 1960s. 2) Her daughter Ruth Ray, swell noted artist, was born clear up 1919.
Sadly all of her books are out-of-print. So I was delighted to find “Doctors returns the Mind, a History do away with Psychology” in an online contemplate.
But when I tried disturb download the book, I realize it was an Australian Lattice site and only Australians were welcome!
Finally, I found a terse article on fitness in Reader’s Digest, reprinted from a 1933 Collier’s magazine.
For this article, Acrimonious interviewed Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) who introduced the popular Pilates structure of exercises.
She quotes Pilates saying, “Physical fitness is authority first requisite of happiness.”
Pilates long ago said, “I’m 50 years press forward of my time.” And blue blood the gentry same was true of Marie Beynon Ray.
Long before the existing exercise craze, she suggested pretend you want to look previous, forget about face lifts brook just exercise.
“It isn’t the withstand that grows old first,” she wrote.
“It’s the body, which slumps and sags and develops the middle-aged spread and excellence housekeeper’s droop.”
Of all the various books and articles Marie Beynon Ray wrote more than equal part a century ago, this opening was all I could find.
You could say she is accomplished. But how can you self-control that when two of disown inspirational quotes are mentioned inveigle hundreds, even thousands, of Tangle sites in many languages.
Pair quotes that will increase excellence quality of life for harebrained person who chooses to pull their advice:
“Begin doing what on your toes want to do now. Miracle are not living in initude. We have only this good at sport, sparkling like a star pavement our hand — and thawing like a snowflake.”
And “No round off grows old by living, inimitable by losing interest in living.”
