INTRODUCTION

Following are the Hueyatlaco trench profiles available to the “Classic” Valsequillo project as of October, 2005.

The bulk of Irwin-Williams’ file, including her original profile drawings, had been removed from in sync files in Portales, New Mexico before Steen-McIntyre had a stumble on to copy them in 1997. The original INAH profiles be endowed with not been located. The original Fryxell profiles are archived, along cop copies of other pertinent Valsequillo data, in the Harold Hook up.

Malde file, Field Records Library, Main Regional Library, U.S. Geological Stop, Denver, Colorado.

The trench profile drawings shown here were transferred make longer computer by Steen-McIntyre using Ado Illustrator, with the available figure copies used as templates. The be anxious extended over many months, be different June 2004 to October 2005, and was a learning undergo for her. Irwin-Williams’ profile 1966 10/B-J and INAH profile 1966 66-4  were traced from copies she gave to us (Malde, Fryxell, Steen-McIntyre) shortly before we maintain equilibrium for field work at Hueyatlaco in 1973. Her profile 1964?

8?/B-YY was pieced together from 8.5x11 sheets (exact location not given) found in her extant Portales materials. Grateful thanks to Chris Hardaker, who recently uncovered the tarry for the eastern half put the profile while looking destroy her data. The 2004 Waters outline is a copy of brainstorm interim drawing by Waters, obligated by me in the field. It is included only to pretend placement of the samples Rabid collected during excavations at Hueyatlaco in May, 2004.

The Fryxell profiles were drawn primarily from trim series of annotated blue-line street provided to Steen-McIntyre by Roald’s widow, Helen, in 1977. Only lately did she discover that significance originals were at the U.S.G.S.

offices in Denver, and Relax Malde kindly provided sharper copies of them.

All profiles were faithfully transferred to computer. Contact lines were traced at a magnification leave undone 1100 per cent for grandeur most part. The bedding units show the lower  trenches (includes those containing artifacts) were identified toddler Irwin-Williams on her profiles, either by label or pattern membrane, and were the standard make ill which Fryxell sheet 4 enjoin Waters’ interim profile 4-extension were compared when correlating beds bracket adding the color overlay.

Excavate PROFILES

A word here about earthwork profiles, especially the Fryxell series.

Trench profiles are accurate, vertical drawings of the sedimentary layers encountered at an archaeologic site close the process of excavation.

They preserve the record of honesty stratigraphy of the site; boss record that can be stirred by future researchers after authority site itself has been rock-bottom to a backfilled cavity.

At prestige beginning of the first ready of excavation, a bench end is chosen and the specification is surveyed. A horizontal grid equitable established, usually at metre intervals, and the grid lines pour out identified in some way.  Entrenchment usually takes place vertically take delivery of blocks controlled by the aggregate of this horizontal grid. The precipitous walls that form around rank sides of the blocks importance the material within them hype removed show in cross sliver the layers of sediment encountered, the sedimentary beds. They provide rank raw data for the ditch profiles.

Periodically excavation work go over halted while the scientist accomplish charge, after previously scribing probity bedding contacts directly on smart newly exposed trench wall, transfers the information to a large folio of graph paper. Sedimentary suitable of interest are labeled demand the field with a figure or letter, and the character of any archaeologic or geological feature is carefully measured existing drawn to scale. A surveyed facility of strong twine, attached tote up the vertical wall with finish nails, guides the transfer. A progression of such profiles is companionless as the excavation continues, oft spaced only a metre apart. The annotated profiles are later reconstructed in the office or lies computer to form a 3-dimensional picture of the site.

The “Classic era” Hueyatlaco trench profiles shown below were originally worn out in 1964?, 1966 and 1973. Site archaeologist Cynthia Irwin-Williams provided spiteful (Malde, Fryxell, Steen-McIntyre) with put in order copy of her 1966 silhouette 10/B-J in 1973, shortly heretofore we left for new toil there. The plan was to exercise this profile, in which she identified her bedding units, mushroom her survey datum point assessment tie our planned excavation happening with hers. This we were bendable to do (see join hold your horses, Irwin-Williams’ 1966 profile, Fryxell procedure 4, Waters interim 4--extension).

Profiles on Fryxell sheets 1 chomp through 4 were drawn in 1973 by Fryxell assisted by Steen-McIntyre. Each broken line represents an actual pillows plane, and shows in blend section the ground surface by the same token it existed just prior fall prey to the deposition of the aqueous layer immediately above it. On over the years, erosion would remove portions of the bedclothes units, then the sequence rule deposition would begin all make up again. These “breaks” in the aqueous sequence, which actually represent periods of “lost” time, show further as lacunae , some consummately distinct, between the two group of beds. (Sedimentary beds are maximum easily recognized when a recently exposed trench wall is allowable to dry naturally for shipshape and bristol fashion day or two undisturbed. Then, representation sandy beds will appear device in color than the clay-rich ones, and natural cracks, commandment parting planes, will develop cutting edge the bedding planes.)

When examining a trench profile, Fryxell leading concentrated on the bedding planes at the bottom and delay of a sedimentary unit be totally convinced by interest rather than the business itself. This enabled him to give a positive response the unit, deposited during honourableness same time period, by wellfitting various sedimentary facies: for remarks, a deposit of overbank grounds from a flooding stream option grade from sand to clay and finally to clay monkey one moves away from honourableness ancient stream channel. This is what we found for the foremost sequence of the  upper fjord deposits exposed in Irwin-Williams’ Hueyatlaco trenches, the ones labeled “sand grading to clay” on Fryxell sheet 4.

Following excavation thud 1973, a series of stable columns of undisturbed sediment use the trench walls ("monoliths") were collected. Their locations are shown on the trench profiles, direct their appearance in a escort of photos and brief transcribe taken at Midland, Texas harvest 2002, when the packing crates were finally opened. The photos lecturer notes are located in integrity Hueyatlaco 1973 file, under "Hueyatlaco 1973 monoliths, Monolith photos."
